iPhone 3G Commercials Around the World

Ok this one is for the first gen, but I still like it:

First Post From iPhone

After a week with my iPhone I have to say I’m pretty happy. Yes, it could be more stable and yes, the twenty minute iTunes backups are a pain, but I have total faith that Apple will fix these problems and it doesn’t bother me.

As for the app store, I have started uninstalling the apps I don’t use. What’s left?

Twitteriffic - Twinkle is interesting, but Twitteriffic still has the advantage. I expect these two apps tow evolve differently and push each other at the same time.

Tuner - hello radio on my iPod.

NetNewsWire - Here’s hoping I don’t get hit by a bus reading feeds while walking outside.

Things - it doesn’t sync yet but it looks fabulous. My Lists is a much simpler contender too.

Buying A 3G iPhone In Japan

Neil Duckett:

“It was the most anticipated purchase i have ever made.”

iPhone Passcode Lock and Location Awareness

Location Awareness is one of the sweetest features of the iPhone and it opens a whole world of of possible applications.

But I have two small feature requests:

1) Use my location to disable the passcode lock when I’m at home. I only want my phone to lock when I’m away from my nest.

2) Give me the option to let apps know my location without asking me. I’m not worried about that and it’s a pain to have to constantly approve an app to allow it to know my location.

New Malloc Finds 33 Year Old Yacc Bug

Ottoo Moerbeek has created a new malloc implementation which caused a bug that has been lurking in yacc for 33 years to come to light:

“My new malloc has some features not found in the current malloc: it moves allocations smaller than a page but bigger than half a page to the end of the page, to have a greater chance of catching buffer overflows. Even without guard pages, this works most of the time, since we have a randomized mmap(2): there’s a pretty big chance that there is a hole after a page allocated. Accessing that hole leads to a segmentation fault.”

For another heroic bug tracking tale, also be sure to check out Wil Shipley’s The Greatest Bug of All.
